I feel very fortunate and proud to be part of such a strong division and to work alongside outstanding colleagues across British Columbia who are dedicated to advancing innovation in research, education, and patient care every day. Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of serving as Head of the UBC Division of Hematology. During this time, I have come to know many of my colleagues more closely, and I continue to be impressed by and deeply appreciative of their unwavering commitment to education, research, and patient care across all sites, despite the many challenges we face.

Together, we foster an innovative, collaborative, and compassionate environment that enables our members to provide accessible, high-quality research, education, and care throughout British Columbia. As Head of the UBC Division of Hematology, I am committed to promoting a respectful, culturally safe, and inclusive workplace that prioritizes the well-being of physicians, learners, staff, and patients.

1976 – 2026

On May 27th, 2026 the Division of Hematology celebrated 50 years of growth, collaboration, patient care, advancement, and sucesses by reminiscing over each of the past 5 decades.

Division Member Spotlight

Dr. Hayley Merkeley

Dr. Merkeley’s interest in hematology began during medical school, when she discovered how much she enjoyed the visual and investigative side of the specialty.

I loved how visual it was. Getting to look at blood cells under the microscope and being able to tell exactly what was wrong with your patient really appealed to me.

That fascination has stayed with her. Even now, she regularly visits the laboratory to examine blood films and work through challenging cases.
